DIVERTED

Eight planes had to be diverted from Manchester Airport last night because of fog. Six flights landed at Liverpool Airport and two were diverted to the East Midlands. A reader also tells us that an easyJet flight to Liverpool Airport was diverted to Manchester last night too.

The Manchester problems were exacerbated because airport only had one runway - runway two - working due to maintenance work. This runway takes less aircraft in poor visibility weather, however, flights were re-fuelled at Liverpool and East Midlands and re-directed back to the airport, landing an hour later than expected.

A supervisor at Manchester Airport was suspended from duty for hanging a picture of Jesus on a staff room wall. The 40-year-old Roman Catholic man, a team-leader in the airport parking department, was escorted off the site after a colleague complained.

It is understood that the man found the picture of the Sacred Heart of Jesus - the subject of devotion by many Catholics - in a desk draw while cleaning out an office. He placed the picture on a wall in a staff rest room prompting the complaint.

Bosses suspended the man and launched an investigation, but he was reinstated without a blemish on his record after three days. Trade union leaders who backed his case say he has been left 'very upset' by what has happened. They said he wasn't trying to cause offence and have described his suspension as an 'over reaction.' Manchester Airport Ban Push Starts

Bosses at Manchester Airport have banned car park attendants from giving motorists a push start if they break down, the Manchester Evening News reports. The policy has been condemned by motoring groups, with one critic saying the airport had 'thrown common sense out of the window'.

Officials at the airport - which claims to provide 'outstanding customer service' - introduced the rule to prevent staff accidentally damaging vehicles when they are trying to help owners. But a spokesman for the Association of British Drivers said: 'It would be a matter of normal humanity to decide to help someone who is experiencing difficulty at their airport car parks. The employer should just keep out of it and allow people to make their own personal judgement.' For the full story please go to UK Airport News
