JOB LOSSES AT MANCHESTER AIRPORT

327 baggage handlers are to be made redundant at Manchester Airport after bosses decided to close their in house ground services firm.

Talks had been underway to try to save some of the jobs at airport owned Ringway Handling Services after airport chiefs said the company was making a loss in a `fiercely competitive market'. But a 90-day consultation period has come to an end and the airport has decided the business will shut as earlier announced.

An airport spokesman said: ‘We have now completed the formal consultation process with the trade unions and employee representatives on the future of Ringway Handling Services and, regrettably, the decision has been taken to close the business. This will result in the loss of 327 posts.'

‘We are very hopeful our people will find employment elsewhere at the airport or will be able to be redeployed within the business. We are offering every support possible to ensure they are treated with compassion and dignity during this difficult time.’

Other baggage handling firms are advertising for staff and the airport says there is hope many of the workers will find new jobs on-site. But trade union leaders say they are disappointed at the decision.

EMERGENCY LANDING AT MANCHESTER AIRPORT

A Chicago-bound plane with 195 passengers and crew made an emergency landing at Manchester Airport yesterday afternoon. The plane then had to be towed from the runway, causing incoming flights to be diverted.

The American Airlines flight AA55 was flying from Manchester to Chicago O'Hare when a flight crew spotted a problem with hydraulics in the landing gear. The captain made the decision to turn back and an emergency landing was made at around 14:10.

Manchester Airport implemented full emergency landing procedures and lined the runway with fire engines. The 'high speed landing' tore two of the plane's tires and the aircraft had to be towed off the runway, but the plane landed safely and no-one was injured. Operations at the airport had to be suspended for over an hour, leading to the diversion 17 incoming flights

X Factor band Eton Road and Happy Mondays singer Rowetta were among the 200 guests at the glitzy fund-raising ball at the Radisson SAS Hotel at Manchester Airport.

She organised Saturday's ball, supported by sponsors Copyshop of Cheadle, which featured entertainment from Eton Road, the Mersey Beatles and Stockport comedian Vince Miller. Kirsty went on a life-changing holiday with the charity when she was nine and has raised £43,000 over the past 3 years.

Manchester Airport News 22/02/08

A school is being built near Manchester Airport using technology to ensure it is both environmentally friendly and a quiet place to study.

Stockport Academy is replacing 60-year-old Avondale High School in Cheadle Heath. The £28m building is just four miles from the airport. In order to make it a better place to learn, it features the latest sound-proofing technology and insulation to filter out the noise of hundreds of flights passing overhead each day.

Even so, designers were concerned that sound could still enter in the summer when windows were opened. So they created a ventilation system that allows fresh air to enter the school while keeping sounds to a minimum.

Engineering company Buro Happold installed massive loops of pipes buried deep in the earth, a system popular in Scandinavian countries. During summer, the earth's temperature is still relatively cool. The pipes carry water which is cooled below ground before being pumped back into the school.

The same system can also help heat the school in winter, when the soil underneath is far warmer than the temperature outside. It will also help the school meet its target of meeting a fifth of its energy needs through renewable source.

PARK AND RIDE AIRPORT PARKING

Park and ride parking is the oldest and cheapest form of Airport Parking there is, and this article gives the low down on exactly what can be expected if you book this kind of service.

As park and ride airport parking is cheaper than meet and greet the whole process is slightly longer. In past years park and ride was nowhere near as good or efficient as it is today and is now holding its own against the likes of meet and greet airport parking.

With park and ride airport parking the customer drives to the car park and hops on a transfer coach that would then take them to Manchester Airport for instance. Upon the customers arrival back into the country they would hop back on the transfer coach and be taken back to the car park where they then collect their vehicle.

There are still airport car parks out there who do not run dedicated transfer coaches which im sure you can appreciate slow the whole process down. In the main most park and ride providers generally follow the same procedure.

The customer drives direct to the car park where he parks in the arrival bay and gos to the reception. They will probably be asked to fill out a small form with such details as mileage registration etc and asked to hand over their keys. The customer’s luggage will then be placed onto the transfer minibus and the customer will be taken to the airport terminal.

Once the customer has left the car park their vehicle will be removed from the arrival bay and parked securely in the main car park where it can be accessed upon the customers return.

When the customer arrives back into the country they will call the number provided upon their departure and the airport parking provider will despatch the minibus to collect them and bring them back. Most companies now will run to and from the airport with one customer on the minibus but some airport parking providers will still insist the minibus is full before leaving. As a result please check the more info pages on our site http://www.mfairportparking.com/ for details of this.

When the customer arrives back at the car park their car will be waiting again in the arrival bay. Your keys need to be collected from reception and the car will be released.

Overall park and ride parking is a much cheaper but with all businesses there are sharks out there so be sure to check out the airport parking provider carefully. MF Airport Parking are local to Manchester Airport and offer Manchester Airport Parking only. Meet and Greet AIrport Parking

Meet and Greet, Valet, Chauffeur are all exactly the same service and this article gives the low down on exactly what can be expected if you book this kind of service.

Meet and greet parking essentially has come about to make the parking process a whole lot simpler for the customer and to cut down on waiting time.

With Meet and greet the customer drives directly to the airport terminal they are flying from for an agreed time. The time is usually agreed between the customer and the parking provider in advance. Approximately fifteen minutes before the arrival the customer generally is advised to call the airport parking provider. This call prompts the airport parking provider to get themselves of to the designated meeting point, thus cutting down waiting time for both parties.

The airport parking provider once in contact should do a thorough inspection of the vehicle making a note of all dints, scratches and general damage to the vehicle. After the inspection they should give the customer a note to sign for the damage. This process simply covers the airport parking provider against any fraudulent insurance claims.

Once the inspection process is completed the airport parking provider will explain to the customer the arrival procedure for their return. This can vary between provider but basically is as simple as to call a specific number once they have collected their luggage and make there way to a designated are where their car will be waiting.

At this point the customer should check the car over and ensure that the only damage on the vehicle is the agreed damage that they signed for on their departure. It is at this point that the customer must report any damage as once the car has been driven away the airport parking provider may not accept liability for any extra damage so be careful. For more details on this please check out the airport parking providers terms and conditions.

Overall Meet and greet airport parking is a much more user friendly service but with all businesses there are sharks out there so be sure to check out the airport parking provider carefully. MF Airport Parking ltd are local to Manchester Airport and offer Manchester Airport Parking only. As we are a local company we are familiar with all of the airport parking providers we use and can guarantee their professionalism. We are always on hand to answer any questions you may have about any of the Manchester Airport Parking car parks we offer so please feel free to email us at info@mfairportparking.com

In the past meet and greet parking has been extremely expensive but as you will see on the MF Airport Parking ltd website the prices have come right down and you can expect to pay approximately £40 for an eight day stay.

We at MF Airport Parking are continually trying to improve the parking process and like to lead from the front. We are always eager to hear from our customers or potential customers so if anybody has any views on Meet and greet or an simply think of a way to improve the service then please get in touch, either by posting a comment here or by emailing us at info@mfairportparking.com

SMUGGLING SCAM

A 35-year old man was jailed for four years on Monday at Manchester Crown Court for his part in a major counterfeit cigarette smuggling scam. Colin Haines of Isleworth, Middlesex was charged with being knowingly concerned in the fraudulent evasion of Excise duty relating to the illegal importation of 8,270,000 counterfeit cigarettes from China in June 2005.

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) officers originally arrested Mr Haines in October 2005 in relation to a single illegal importation when he was working for a freight company based at Manchester Airport. During the operation HMRC officers recovered a total of 8,270,000 cigarettes equating to a duty evasion in excess of £1.7 million.

The subsequent HMRC wider investigation found that there had been other suspicious importations, leading to the seizure of over 25 million cigarettes. There was insufficient evidence to link Haines to each seizure but it was clear that the smuggling scam was larger in scale, and during the wider investigation in 2005 over 34 million cigarettes were seized.
