MANCHESTER AIRPORT PARKING AND HOW IT ALL BEGAN WITH MALES GARAGE

Males Garage was the first Manchester Airport Parking Company at Manchester Airport but what follows is the story of how Manchester Airport Parking was born and how it has evolved over the years. From the cinder area of yester year to the huge industry it is today.

1953 and 1954 were massive years for Manchester Airport as they started to operate cutting edge aircraft such as the Convair liners and flying out to more European destinations. Long haul aircraft such as the DC-6 started to turn up in ever increasing numbers as air traffic increased at Manchester Airport.

Manchester Airports terminals by 1954 were expanding at a phenomenal rate as passenger figures reached approximately two hundred and fifty thousand. Three months after officially changing its name to Manchester Airport they reached their one-millionth passenger who incidentally travelled to the glamorous destination of the Isle of Man.

All this growth at Manchester Airport saw an increase in motor traffic and an opening for the first Manchester Airport car park. One young person was about to fill this gap. Jack Males the owner of Males Garage, an ex serviceman who had recently returned home to Wythenshawe opened up a small tractor repair company a short distance away from Manchester Airport not knowing the opportunity that was about to come his way.

As well as the rapid growth of Manchester Airport Males Tractor Services also expanded and branched out into plant hire and construction work. During this expansion of both businesses people would travel from Manchester Airport and at the time the car parking at Manchester Airport consisted of nothing more than a small cinder area close to the terminal with the capacity for only fifty cars. Upon their return travellers would have problems starting their vehicles so naturally went looking for help at the nearest place possible. Luckily for Jack Males and Males Garage they were the closest, so benefited from this extra trade by starting vehicles and providing small repairs.

This simple act of help would revolutionise the Manchester Airport Parking industry, as we know it today. Males Garage car storage was born, offering a secure alternative to the standard cinder path that was previously used, as well as still offering the convenience of being close to the airport. Over the years Males Garage went from strength to strength and for fifty-three years have been at the top of the parking food chain offering excellent customer service resulting in many customers returning year after year.

It was inevitable that during those fifty three years Males Garage could not possibly continue to be the only off airport Manchester Airport Parking provider and other companies started to spring up to keep up with the growth of Manchester Airport and its ever increasing passenger list. Despite this ever increasing growth in off airport parking companies Males Garage continued to operate and saw so many smaller companies come and go.

In 2007 a minimum of twenty two million people passed through Manchester Airport with still more to come. Manchester Airport decided they wanted the land where Males Garage stood and after fifty-three years of trading made Jack Males of Males garage an offer he could not refuse. I am sure all of the other Manchester Airport Parking companies in the area who have grown businesses as a result of Jacks insight all them years ago would like to say a huge thank you to Jack for the birth of Manchester Airport Parking as we know it today.

BAA TO LET AIRPORT GO TO THE MANCHESTER AIRPORT GROUP?? : MFA IRPORT PARKING

It looks like BAA are going to be offloading the likes of Gatwick and Stansted airport after all and MAG (Manchester Airport Group) are sitting pretty ready to pounce and take over and make a bid.

This can only be good news for Manchester Airport in my opinion due to the expansion of the whole group and better resources or is it? Will it take valuable funds away from Manchester Airport if all goes through and hinder the development of the site?

As far as off site airport parking goes I think this will help all of the off site car parks as if money if floating aroung from the group at other airports surely their focus on their on site parking at Manchester Airport should drop off allowing the offsiters to get more traffic.

Lets wait and see what the outcome is but in my opinion all will go ahead and the Manchester Airport Group will get what they want in the end. They usually do.

What To Do About Lost Luggage At Manchester Airport

Standing at the carousel at Manchester Airport after a long or short haul flight hoping and praying that your luggage will appear. After what seems to be an eternity of waiting, you finally decide that your luggage has not arrived back with you and wonder what you are supposed to do next. This article describes what you can do to get your luggage back as quickly as possible.

First of all we need to understand why luggage goes missing in the first place. Missing luggage can usually be put down to human error. There are many different people who will interact with your luggage during its long journey and you are dependent such people as baggage handlers, check in personnel and security staff all getting their individual jobs absolutely right. Unfortunately we do not live in an ideal world and things will go wrong and unfortunately it could be your bag that gets lost.

Once you have realised that your bag is missing the first thing you need to do is report it missing at the lost baggage desk. At Manchester Airport these desks can usually be found in the baggage return areas but. Any member of staff will be able to direct you to the nearest desk should you have difficulty in locating them.

When reporting your lost luggage be sure to give as detailed a description as you can as it is much easier to locate a bag if they know what they are looking for. You may also be asked for a description of your luggage contents, again as much detail as possible but not totally necessary as nobody will expect you to know everything you have packed in your luggage.

Unfortunately there is no set time limit for finding lost luggage and airlines will more than likely not declare your luggage as officially lost until approximately 21 days so with any luck it will turn up naturally before then. There are various agencies that can help with lost luggage and are not difficult to find. they are off airport companies and more than likely a member of staff will give out their details. After the twenty one day period if your luggage still has not turned up you are entitled in most cases to claim compensation from your airline for your losses. I realise that this really is not what you would like but at least if you are aware of this fact you may get something back, then its not a total loss. In some cases airlines may be obliged to pay up to eight hundred pounds per person for lost luggage.

A very important note that everybody should know and not many people do, is that most airlines will try and persuade their customers to claim for any lost luggage through their own personal travel insurance. You are well within your rights to push the airline for direct compensation as under the Montreal Convention if an airline accepts any item as checked baggage it must accept liability for it. Most travel policies do not cover lost luggage but if they do they will no doubt be claiming the money back directly off the airline anyway.

The long and short of lost luggage is, that there really is no hard or fast or even guaranteed way to get your luggage back. Only ways and means to try. Armed with this information you will stand more than a fighting chance of getting your luggage back or at least some money to help ease the pain.

MANCHESTER AIRPORT NO GROWTH IN 2008 : MF AIRPORT PARKING

Manchester Airports Group chief executive Geoff Muirhead has said that slower growth in the airline industry and increased taxes on passengers is set to take its toll on the business over the next 12 months.

Speaking at a regional economic discussion organised by the CBI last week, he said he was ‘not anticipating any growth at all’ this year at Manchester Airport, but MAG's smaller regional airports including Humberside, Bournemouth and East Midlands should fare slightly better due to the fact that they served more of the low cost airlines.

He said: ‘Last year was the first year I can remember in the aviation industry where growth has been down to 3 percent, except when there has been a major economic shock,’ adding that average growth rates for aviation over the past 30 years have been closer to 7 percent.
Mr Muirhead said the Government's doubling of Air Passenger Duty rates last year as a factor in slowing growth. He said: ‘It is a £2.5bn tax on the aviation industry and I think it's getting to a tipping point where it's really quite challenging in respect of the UK's competitiveness. We cannot compete as a trading nation if we don't facilitate people getting around to actually do the trading. Nothing is without its cost, as we saw a few years ago when pension funds were targeted.’

He also argued that demand would be weakened by increasing pressures on consumer spending, saying: ‘The things you have no choice about — food, energy, transport — those are going up at horrendous rates.’

How To Find Safe Airport Car Transfers With Children At Manchester Airport

Since the new regulations were brought into force regarding travelling in your car with children, getting to and from Manchester Airport or any airport for that matter has become a huge problem for families. To find a reputable taxi company with suitable car seats for each of your children can be harder than finding your holiday in the first place. So how can you get your children to and from Manchester Airport safely and legally, without breaking the bank?

Regulations state that from September 2006 children who are passengers in cars, vans or goods vehicles need to use some form of child restraint. A child under the age of three must use a suitable restraint. From your childrens third birthday up until they reach a height of 135cm or reach their 12th birthday must also use the correct restraint. Reading the above you can pretty much see that from birth up until the age of twelve some form of child restraint needs to be used when travelling with a child.

Anybody who has tried, knows that getting to and from Manchester Airport with your children in suitable and safe transport can be a nightmare, not to mention expensive. Peoples first thoughts will turn to local taxi companies for a solution. I suppose this is one way to tackle the issue, but from personal experience is not the most reliable. Imagine booking a taxi and asking for child restraints for a five year old and a one year old. By law depending on the size of your children these restraints will be two different types of car seat. If you are lucky enough to find a taxi company that holds more than one type of car seat you are still leaving it to chance that when the driver is despatched he or she brings the correct seats with them.

Its up to you if you wish to gamble with your childrens safety or not but I am guessing that most of you would not want leave this to chance and would rather a better solution. Before offering the solution lets consider the other downside of travelling with children. If you are flying out of Manchester Airport and have to be there to check in at 04:00 the last thing you want is to be waiting round for taxis and having to keep your tired and grouchy children awake so you can squeeze them into an unfamiliar child seat. Sound familiar? Well fear not.

Meet and greet airport parking is a much safer and a more family friendly solution for travelling with your children to and from Manchester Airport. With meet and greet parking the worry of, is this correct car restraint is eliminated. You as the customer travel to the airport in your own vehicle at a time to suit you and your family. No waiting round for taxi companies to turn up, or worrying whether or not they will have the correct restraints with them. By booking meet and greet parking you have your child or children, in their own approved car restraints that they are used to, and hopefully comfortable in. To any parent reading this article will know that this in itself can be a godsend, as will cause less disruption for the child thus resulting in a smoother transfer and hopefully pain free check in once inside the airport.

You may be saying to yourself that this must be expensive? Depending on your location to Manchester Airport, meet and greet airport parking can be very reasonable and with prices coming down everyday can, in most cases work out cheaper than a taxi journey.

You cannot put a price on your childrens safety so even if it is does work out slightly more expensive than a taxi ride I am sure you will agree its worth the extra few pennies.

MANCHESTER AIRPORT CALLS FOR BAA BREAK UP

Manchester Airport bosses have rival Gatwick 'firmly in their sights' as MPs and leading airlines call for the break-up of BAA, the Manchester Evening News reports. The UK's biggest airports operator is currently the subject of a review by the Competition Commission, which could rule that it should sell one of its London airports.

A powerful committee of MPs has called for BAA's monopoly of the capital's major gateways - it also owns Heathrow and Stansted - to be ended over the weekend. Yesterday, senior executives from easyJet, Ryanair, Virgin and bmi met transport secretary Ruth Kelly to also make this call.

Manchester Airports Group (MAG), the country's second largest airports operator behind BAA, already owns East Midlands, Bournemouth and Humberside Airports, 'but would dearly love to add a London gateway to its portfolio,' the newspaper reports.

It says that, although Gatwick or Stansted would cost billions, MAG chiefs are willing to form a partnership with private equity or other outfits, such as American investors or the Australian infrastructure and banking giant Macquarie, to achieve their goal.

Geoff Muirhead, chief executive of Manchester Airports Group, told the MEN: ‘We have a strong track record when it comes to running airports - we have a lot of skilled people who have developed very good relationships with airlines and other partners. The group is interested in acquiring assets that will add value for our shareholders.’

The newspaper speculates that 'BAA, which is owned by Ferrovial, could decide to press ahead with a break-up of its own accord before being ordered to do so by competition regulators, which would prevent a 'fire sale' of its assets. That could mean an announcement by the end of the year.'

With the Competition Commission not expected to report before the end of the year (and a final outcome perhaps two years away after appeals), BAA planning to use the London airports to back bonds refinancing its debt, and the growing credit crisis driving down the value of assets, we think this is unlikely.

In addition, MAG is owned by the 10 local authorities of Greater Manchester. We can see a value in the council's owning the airport, which has low debt levels and produces a good income stream for them. It might be difficult politically for the councils to back a highly leveraged - and therefore risky - airport purchase, even with a big partner in tow.
