Belfast International is the busiest airport in Northern Island and saw around 4 million passengers pass through in 2010. It is the second busiest airport in the whole of Ireland, Dublin Airport being first. Belfast International consists of one terminal. The airport is located 6 miles from Antrim and 13.2 miles from Belfast. 18 Airlines operate from Belfast International serving around 75 destinations. Abertis own Belfast International along with Stockholm Skavsta and Cardiff Airport.
Belfast international airport is located 30km north west of Belfast city just outside the town of Aldergrove. The airport serves around five million passengers every year.
The airport has many bars and restaurants, restaurants ranging from fast food outlets, sandwich bars, bakery & a luxurious cafe. Belfast airport also has many shops in which you can pick up some last minute items and duty free goods. The shops selling products such as electronics, health & beauty, clothing & travel essentials.
Other facilities that can be found in the airport include cash machines, tourist information desks, currency exchange, baby changing & a business lounge.
Important info Check-in desks open 2 hours before boarding for the majority of flights and 3 hours before boarding for Trans-Atlantic flights. Check-in desks close 40 minutes before boarding for each flight.
There are ATMs, currency exchange, baby change facilities and a selection of shops and restaurants in the terminal.
Pay-as-you-go internet access points are available in the departure lounge and BT Open-zone Wi-Fi is available throughout the airport.
Designated smoking areas are located outside the terminal building and, once past customs, there is an airside smoking facility located beside Bar Des Voyageurs. There is a £1 charge for using the airside smoking facility.
Disabled access is available at Belfast Karl Airport Parking. A shuttle bus is provided from the car park also. There are disabled toilets throughout the terminal and all are equipped with an emergency pull cord. An Ambulift is available to assist less mobile passengers boarding the aircrafts.
History of the airport Belfast International was established in 1917 and was used as a training ground for the Royal Flying Corps during WWI. It was formerly known as Aldergrove Airport and can still be referred to as Aldergrove. The ten years between 1997 and 2007 saw an increase of 2.8million passengers from 2.47million passing through in 1997 to 5.27 million in 2007. Passenger numbers have dropped since 2007, though and it was recorded that 4.01 million passed through in 2010.
