Thomas Cook Announce Extra Flights From Manchester Airport

Just a very very quick blog post as we are guilty of not posting for a while. We could have put this in our news section but thought it best to add it here today.

Thomas Cook have announced that they will be putting more flights on this summer to Florida from Manchester Airport.

Five additional flights a week will be leaving sunny Manchester this summer so the Manchester Airport Parking facilities will be booking up quickly so dont miss out and book early.

Manchester Airport history - a brief introduction

The airport originated in mid 1934 when the location was selected to build an airfield. On 25 July 1934, Manchester City Council voted narrowly in favour of the Ringway site as the City's new airport. The site for the planned airport was at the time in the Cheshire parish of Ringway (as it was south of the River Mersey).

Construction was ceremonially started by the Lord Mayor on 28 November 1935 and was completed for civil aviation use by early summer 1938. The airport was officially opened on 25 June 1938 during a public air display that included both civil and RAF aircraft and received its first scheduled flight, a KLM operated Douglas DC-2 from Amsterdam. The airport at this time was called Ringway, named after the parish it lay within. Pre-war, KLM was the only international operator out of Ringway and offered a request stop at Doncaster. 4000 passengers used the airport in 1938 and another 4000 during the first eight months of 1939, before declaration of war brought an end to civil operations.

Construction of a Royal Air Force station commenced in 1939 on the north east edge of the airfield. RAF Ringway was used for both operational flying and training. The main user was No.1 Parachute Training School RAF which trained over 60,000 paratroopers between June 1940 and March 1946. The trainees parachuted over Tatton Park, after receiving permission from land owner, Lord Egerton.

The advent of heavier aircraft types resulted in the all-grass landing area being badly damaged in wet weather during the winter of 1940/41. The ruts froze during cold weather, damaging the undercarriages of taxying aircraft. Two asphalt runways of 3,000 ft (910 m) length were therefore hastily laid down between June and December 1941. The runways were designated 06/24 and 10/28. The former was lengthened to 4,200 ft (1,300 m) by January 1943 to accommodate the four-engined aircraft using RAF Ringway and the 3,300 ft (1,000 m) Runway 02/20 was constructed.

A complex of hangars and assembly sheds on the north west side of the airfield was used by Fairey Aviation for the construction, modification and testing of over 4,000 aircraft. From spring 1939, Avro used the 1938-built main hangar for assembly and testing the prototype Avro Manchester, Avro Lancaster and Avro Lincoln bombers. Three southside hangars were erected in 1942/1943 and used for the assembly of Avro York military transport aircraft.

Runways 02/20 and 10/28 ceased to be used by airliners by the mid 1950s but the latter was used by light aircraft for another 30 years. Both are permanently out of use.

Security Procedures

Hand baggage

Manchester Airport have now lifted the 1 bag per passenger rule.

We would remind all passengers that each airline has their own policy regarding the amount of hand baggage allowed on their aircraft and we strongly recommend that information regarding this is sought directly from the Airline before travel.

At the airport
To ensure your journey is a smooth one, please ensure that you read the latest regulations about what you can and cannot take on board the aircraft.

Liquids
Passengers will be allowed to take liquids, gels and pastes of 100mls or less in their hand baggage. These items must be contained within a small, transparent re-sealable plastic bag, which will have to be removed from their hand baggage and x-rayed separately.

To save time and expense please come prepared with your own correct sized plastic bag, however you can purchase plastic bags in the terminals.

The new rules stipulate that the plastic bag must not exceed one litre capacity per passenger - that’s around half the size of a standard A4 piece of paper and it must be sealable. The bag can contain two or more items of less than 100mls/100g each but must not be cluttered to allow security officers to carry out thorough checks.

Plastic bags are sold in ALL Terminals with two bags available for £1, if you forget to bring your own. Plastic bag dispensers are conveniently located in multiple sites around check-in and security alongside coin change machines.

Liquids include:

Water and other drinks, soups, syrups
Creams, lotions and oils
Perfumes
Lipsticks
Sprays
Gels, including hair and shower gels
Contents of pressurised containers, including shaving foam, other foams and deodorants
Pastes, including toothpaste
Liquid-solid mixtures
Mascara
Any other item of a similar consistency.

If you are in doubt on any of the liquid, gels or pastes restrictions then pack them into your suitcase when you check-in your hold luggage.

Large electrical items / Laptops
Laptops and other complex items of electrical equipment have to be removed from hand luggage and screened separately.

WHAT DOES NOT CHANGE

Passengers will continue to be allowed to pack liquids in the bags that they check-in.

Medicines and Baby Foods
Passengers will also be allowed to carry in their hand luggage medicines and dietary requirements including baby foods, for use during the flight.

Please note that; you may be asked for proof that these items are needed. Parents WILL be asked to sample baby milk and food and also those people with dietary requirements (these can be any size).

Passengers will be able to buy liquids including drinks and perfumes either in an EU airport shop after security control, or on board an aircraft operated by an EU airline. If they are sold in a special sealed bag, passengers must not open them before they are screened otherwise the contents may be confiscated at the security checkpoint.

Check-In times
Please check your ticket or travel itinerary, or contact your airline for advice on check in times. Generally, check in desks open 2-3 hours before the flight is due to depart.

Don’t Forget - Before the airport
Before you arrive at Manchester Airport, make sure you have a valid passport (and visa where necessary) for your trip.

Many authorities require a passport that’s valid for at least six months from the time you fly.

Distance To The Airport
Just how far is your chosen car park from the airport you are travelling from? This is an important factor as this will depend on what time you have to leave for the airport. Generally the further away, the cheaper the price.

Always check what sort of insurance the car park has. Edinburgh Airport UK - Past, Present, and Future

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to journey across the ocean to discover a culture or place that is unlike anything you are accustomed? The Past

Then in 1918, this facility was turned into the RAF Turnhouse. RAF stands for the Royal Air Force. This base also was a part of World War II. After the fighter command took charge there was roughly 4,000 feet of pavement laid in order to handle the aircraft known as the Vickers Supermarine Spitfire.

After many years under military control, the first services used commercially were in 1947 when British European Airways was developed. This airline flew between Edinburgh and the city of London. Then in 1952, 6000 feet of pavement was poured to extend the runway. In 1980 there were two international flights to Amsterdam as well Dublin. The next two places were France and Germany.

The Present
Moving forward into the present, the air traffic tower reaching a height of roughly 190 feet was completed in 2005 costing approximately £10m (€16m). There were six gates added in 2006. The main runway's resurfacing was completed in November of 2008. Because of this the runway will last another 15 years before anything needs to be done. Along with the resurfacing of the runway, the construction of the departure lounge began in December of 2008.
The Future

NOXIOUS SMELLS IN CABINS AT MANCHESTER AIRPORT

Really bad smelling fumes have found their way into cabins and flight decks - igniting alerts on eight Manchester Airport Flights, as reported by the Manchester Evening news. One pilot let down th eoxygen masks whilst another flight reported that they felt light headed after takeoff.
Passengers and three cabin attendants reported feeling so unwell from 'noxious fumes' with a 'gas-type' smell on a third plane that a full security alert was triggered. Paramedics were only allowed on board the jet following an emergency landing after the Army was alerted and it was held for 90 minutes by armed police.

The Department for Transport said 116 'contaminated air events' had been reported to the Civil Aviation Authority in 2007. It has been revealled that 8 of these happened on flights to or from Manchester, as reported in CAA documents.

News of this incidents comes days after the government said it was probing claims that contaminated cabin air was making passengers and pilots ill.

LUCKY ESCAPE FOR PILOT AT MANCHESTER AIRPORT

A pilot had a lucky escape when his light aircraft crashed on landing at the City Airport, Manchester, the Manchester Evening News reports. Eye witnesses said that they saw the plane being tossed about by the wind before skirting over the clubhouse, slicing the top off a tree, and landing in a hedge.

Anaesthetist Ahmed Eskander, from Rochdale, lost control of his Denney Kitfox two-seater as he came in to land at the airport. An eyewitness told the newspaper: ‘He screwed up his landing and you could see he'd decided to put on full power and go back round for another attempt. But he went into a stall and was having to fight the wind. The plane almost flipped over, it was like something out of a James Bond film.'

‘The plane came whizzing past the roof of the clubhouse and everybody in there screamed. Then there was a loud bang, and everybody came running out. He'd crashed into trees and then flipped round into a hedge. He narrowly missed crashing into the cars in the car park and only the hedge stopped him from crashing onto Liverpool Road.'

‘It was totally surreal. Somehow he managed to pull himself out of the wreckage before collapsing on the ground. His legs looked like they were cut to the bone and it's no wonder when you saw the crushed cockpit.’

Mr Eskander, who has 600 hours' flying experience, was given stitches to his leg injuries and discharged from hospital.

Airblue, Pakistan's fastest growing private airline, has completed one year of its flights between Manchester Airport and Islamabad, contributing to a market growth of 49.3 percent on the route.

Airblue carried a 84,383 passengers during this period June 2007 to May 2008, which was a 38 percent market share. To celebrate the completion of one year of successful operations, the airline enjoyed cake cutting ceremony followed by awarding a free return Airblue ticket to a lucky passenger through a computer ballot.

Manchester Airport, will mark its 70th anniversary on June 25. Originally called Manchester (Ringway) Airport, the hub is now the UK’s largest regional (non London) airport, and the forth biggest in the UK overall.

A series of celebratory events have been planned to take place throughout the year to celebrate the anniversary, including an M Fest family day, a dinner for dignitaries and the long awaited completion of the new Concorde hangar.

Manchester Airport’s Managing Director Andrew Cornish said: ‘The airport has changed beyond recognition from those early days. In 6 months of operations in 1938 the airport handled 4000 passengers - In 6 months of operations in 2007 the airport handled over 11 million passengers. In 1938 there were 12 destinations served by Manchester, only 1 of them being outside the UK - In 2007 Manchester had over 220 destinations worldwide, more than any other UK airport.'
'In 1938 there were only two check-in desks - In 2008 there are hundreds of check-in desks, plus Express and Internet check-in facilities. The runway in 1938 was 3000 feet in length - The modern runways are 10000 feet (3048 metres) in length.'

Having recently experienced the nightmare that is Palma Airport I can fully applaud Manchester Airports services.

Travelling with Jet2 out of Manchester was absolutely wonderful at least five check in personal made it seamless and we sailed through. Its a pitty I cant say the same about Palma. For such a large airline with so many flights they could have at least opened up more than one check in desk for our returned.

500 PASSENGERS CAUGHT UP IN TWO INCIDENTS AT MANCHESTER AIRPORT

More than 500 passengers were caught up in two separate emergencies within hours of each other at Manchester Airport yesterday, the Manchester Evening News reports.

There were 266 travellers on board a US-bound plane when the captain aborted take-off because of a suspected tyre problem. Then a jet with 245 holidaymakers flying to Manchester from Palma, Mallorca was forced to make an emergency landing because of a suspected wheel fault. No-one was injured, but both aircraft were stranded on taxiways for some time.

The newspaper reports that the Philadelphia-bound US Airways Airbus A330 was heading down the runway at lunchtime yesterday when it is thought a warning light flashed in the cockpit. The captain aborted the take-off and began taxiing back to the terminal, but a tyre then deflated, leaving the aircraft stranded on the tarmac on the approach to Terminal 2.

Fire crews were called as a precaution after smoke was seen coming from the brakes and the passengers were evacuated down steps. As a result, two flights to Manchester, one from the Isle of Man and one from London, had to be diverted to Liverpool while an airfield operations team carried out a runway sweep.

The US airways jet was still on the taxiway at around 15:00 yesterday when a First Choice Airways' Airbus A320 made an emergency landing. It is reported that the problem with the jet coming from Mallorca was related to its nose wheel. The plane was towed to the terminal by a tug just before 16:00.
