Manchester Airport Overview

Manchester Airport is the fourth busiest airport in the UK according to passenger figures, with 21,219,195 passing through the airport in 2008: as such it is the busiest UK airport outside of London and handles more than double the number of passengers of 5th placed Luton Airport. It is home to more than 90 airlines and offers routes to around 180 destinations across the world.

Owned and managed by the ten Greater Manchester metropolitan borough councils who operate as the holding company Manchester Airports Group (MAG), the airport has won numerous awards including World's Best Airport in 1995 and so far in 2010 has already won 3 awards including the Business Travel Awards best UK Airport, Travel Weekly Globe Awards Best Regional Airport and the highly coveted Best UK Airport Toilet.

The airport has 3 terminals:

Terminal 1– Handles international traffic and has an annual capacity of 11 million passengers. Served predominantly by Star Alliance members, charter operators and scheduled airlines, it has recently been redeveloped at a cost of £50 million.

Terminal 2- Mostly used by SkyTeam airline members and long haul and charter airlines. This terminal is only used for international flights and currently has an annual capacity of 8 million passengers but with plans to ultimately expand it to cater for around 25 million a year.

Terminal 3- Previously used exclusively by British Airways and for domestic flights from other airlines, this terminal is now most commonly used by Flybe, Bmibaby, BMI and EasyJet. Most domestic flights depart from Terminal 3 but there are also a number of international routes.

There are however plans in place to change the terminal allocations such that Terminal 1 will be responsible for international scheduled flights, Terminal 2 will handle charter and holiday airlines and Terminal 3 will be the home of budget and domestic flights.

Retail Outlets

Manchester Airport offers a wealth of retail outlets and shopping options. It is however well worth bearing in mind that since extensive recent redevelopment of the airport, there are very few shops before security. In light of this, it is recommended that those who wish to shop check-in sooner rather later to take advantage of the extensive shopping facilities.

Departures from Terminal 3 have access to the Alpha Airport Shopping Tax and Duty Free store which stocks the obligatory cigarettes, alcohol and fragrances alongside an array of other useful items and luxury goods. There are also a selection of retailers including Boots, Dixons Travel, Rolling Luggage, Tie Rack and WH Smith.

Those departing from terminals 1 and 2 have their tax and duty free Shopping needs served by Biza: a brand new and exciting store which goes beyond your expectations when it comes to airport shopping. In addition to this superstore, Terminal 1 also boasts an array of fashion outlets such as Fat Face, Monsoon, Kurt Geiger, Attitude and Timberland. Whilst Terminal 2 offers many of your favourite high street brands: from Accesorize to WH Smith Books and Monsoon to Dixons Travel.

Eating

Manchester Airport offers the ideal dining solution for any occasion, whether you ‘re looking for a quick bite on route the gate, a leisurely meal to run down the hours until boarding or just passing by the airport on your way elsewhere.

Before security the airport boasts The Bollin River Cafe in Terminal 2 which offers a range of hearty Northern dishes set against views of the picturesque River Bollin: the ideal spot to escape from the noise and bustle of the airport. For those looking for somewhere a little more sophisticated there is the Runway Brasserie situated within the Radisson hotel which is found in the middle of the glass Skylink between Terminals 1 and 2. This stylish restaurant offers an eclectic menu and attentive table service.

Once beyond security even more eateries avail themselves, from the fast food options of Burger King in Terminals 1 and 2 through to more laid back establishments such as Giraffe in Terminal 1 Departures, Frankie and Benny’s in Terminal 2 Departures and Delice de France in Terminal 3 Arrivals. Other exciting dining options can be found in Terminal 2’s Broderick’s boutique cafe and Terminal 1’s Wrapid world cuisine fast food outlet in Terminal 1 Arrivals.

Drinking

Whether you’re after a coffee to perk yourself up or an alcoholic tipple to celebrate the start of your holiday, there are an abundance of establishments in Manchester Airport.

Coffee fans are served by both Starbucks and Soho Coffee Co in Terminals 1 and 2 and Costa Coffee in Terminal 3. In addition to these renowned brands there are also more bespoke coffee houses such as Clancy’s and Joes to be found onsite offering snacks and light meals alongside their freshly ground coffee.

All three terminals feature impressive bars in their departure lounges. Runway Bar is located in Terminal 1 and not only provides a range of alcoholic beverages including classy cocktails but also freshly made sandwiches 24 hours a day. Terminal 2 drinkers are catered for by The Observatory Bar which has incredible views of the apron and aircraft stands. This stylish and comfortable bar also offers an exciting new food menu to compliment its range of drinks. Those departing from Terminal 3 benefit from Bar 08 which serves everything from draught Guinness through to champagne, all accompanied by sandwiches from The Best En Route Sandwich Retailer 2009, as voted by the British Sandwich Association.

Additional Attractions

Manchester Airport also serves as an attraction in itself as a result of its Aviation Viewing Park, which is considered to be in the top 10 tourist attractions in the North West of England: drawing 250,000 visitors a year. It’s positioning means that the Aviation Viewing Park is a haven for plane-spotters with around 600 aircraft movements each day. In addition to the opportunity to view aircraft in action, the viewing park is home to Concorde G-BOAC which offers an exciting day out with guided tours available. In fact you can even arrange to get married on the aircraft!

Transport Links

Manchester Airport is easily reached by car, train, bus, coach and of course air! For those travelling light (and without children) public transport options may be of interest. The airport has a train station at its heart which is linked to all terminals by the Skylink. With trains running frequently to more than 100 destinations this integrated travel hub is an essential link between the airport and Manchester City Centre. In addition to the rail links there are bus services running to and from the airport 24 hours a day serving the local area and coaches for those travelling from further afield.

Airport History

Manchester’s aviation history begins in 1910, when Louis Paulhan landed his Farman bi-plane in a field near Burnage and in doing so scooped the £10,000 prize offered by the Daily Mail for the first man to fly from London to Manchester.

Following this feat, a number short-lived aerodromes sprung up in and around Manchester to cater for the ever increasing air traffic, and in 1919, Britain's first ever scheduled air service took off from a private airfield in Manchester, flying to Birkdale Sands in Southport, then on to South Shore, Blackpool.

In 1926 it was realised that the absence of a permanent base for travel in Manchester could be detrimental to future development and business. In 1928, after extensive discussions and planning, Barton near Eccles was chosen as the site of Manchester's new aerodrome. Around the same time Manchester City Council decided to move forward with a municipal airport and opted for a site in Wythenshawe.

Wythenshawe Airport opened for business in 1929 and by 1930 Barton was completed including a control tower and a large hanger. It transpired however that the Barton aerodrome was prone to flooding and as a result work began on sourcing a new site.

The new site found was south west of the city and construction of the new airfield, Ringway, began in 1934. Shortly before the airport opened for airline use in 1938 the aircraft manufacturer Fairey Aviation established a factory there. However it was as a military base that Ringway was to make its mark.

The years 1940 to 1945 saw 60,000 British forces troops training at Ringway. With another prominent plane maker A.V.Roe setting up shop alongside Fairey, some of the most famous military aircraft of the Second World War came to be manufactured in Manchester. It was here that the prototype of the Lancaster bomber made its first flight.

The end of the war brought new opportunities for civil expansion and in 1949 part of the old Parachute School cast off its past and was converted to handle an increasing number of passengers. Two years later the runway was lengthened and in the 1960's an imposing terminal building with air traffic control facilities and two passenger piers was added. That development initiated two decades of increasing traffic and a proportionate expansion of facilities:  including a third pier, new departure hall and a longer runway.

During the 1980s the airport was designated an International Gateway handling direct long-haul international flights. A second international passenger terminal and direct rail and motorway links have made the airport increasingly accessible to a wide catchment area.

Approval to build a second runway, gained against much local opposition, has further enhanced the airport's potential. The second runway further increased passenger figures and helped the airport grow at an even more rapid rate

Manchester Airport now has a third runway up and running, with plans to extend yet again: forecasts show that by 2015 the airport expects to handle around 38 million passengers a year.
