BRIEF INFORMATION ABOUT NEWCASTLE AIRPORT

Newcastle airport, located in Newcastle Upon-Tyne, was recorded the 11th largest UK airport in 2010. There is one terminal in the airport with around 5 million passengers flying each year since 2005. Newcastle airport has 25 airlines serving 85 destinations worldwide. Newcastle airport is owned by seven local authorities and Copenhagen airport.

Airport Amenities

There are four baby change facilities throughout the airport. There is also a games area for children and adults alike called the Game Grid, providing arcade games. There is also a prayer room located on level 2 of the main concourse. Wi-Fi is accessible throughout the terminal and there are also some computers available for passenger use in the departure lounge. There is a currency exchange office which stocks offers over 70 different currencies and is opened every day of the year. There is a variety of restaurants, cafes and shops available within the airport for last minute essentials and dining. The Eagle Bar provides access to the only smoking area once past customs.

Disabled facilities

There are disabled toilets on all levels of the airport, fitted with an emergency cord. The Passenger Assistance Desks provide assistance of locating a disabled toilet. Lower level payphones are situated throughout the airport specifically for disabled passengers. Should a disabled person require wheelchair assistance, they are advised to report to the Airport Passenger Assistance Desk which is located on the main concourse just in the middle of check-in desk 32 and WH Smith shop.

History of the airport

Newcastle  Airport was first opened by Sir Phillip Cunliffe Lister on 26th July 1935. Costing £35 000 to build it consisted of a hangar, clubhouse, fuel garage and grass runway.  In the 10 years from 1997-2007 there was an increase of just under 3.1 million passengers using Newcastle Airport. The peak of passenger number was in 2007 when just over 5.6 million passengers passed through Newcastle airport. In 2010 the number of passengers had dropped to 4.35 million.

Newcastle International Airport lies some 6 miles North West of Newcastle next to the village of Ponteland. It is close to the A1 which gives quick and easy access to Newcastle City, Tyneside and the Scottish Borders.

The airport is owned by seven local authorities and Copenhagen Airport, The CAA recently named Newcastle as the fastest growing regional airport in the UK and expected passenger numbers in 2005 are in excess of 5.4 million. The Airport first opened on the 26th of July, 1935 by the Secretary of State for Air, Sir Phillip Cunliffe-Lister. Incorporating a clubhouse, hanger, workshops, fuel garage and grass runway, at the time it cost �35,000 to build.
