Should a disabled person require wheelchair assistance, they are advised to report to the Airport Passenger Assistance Desk which is located on the main concourse just in the middle of check-in desk 32 and WH Smith shop.

History of the airport

Newcastle  Airport was first opened by Sir Phillip Cunliffe Lister on 26th July 1935. Costing £35 000 to build it consisted of a hangar, clubhouse, fuel garage and grass runway.  In the 10 years from 1997-2007 there was an increase of just under 3.1 million passengers using Newcastle Airport. The peak of passenger number was in 2007 when just over 5.6 million passengers passed through Newcastle airport. In 2010 the number of passengers had dropped to 4.35 million.

Newcastle International Airport lies some 6 miles North West of Newcastle next to the village of Ponteland. It is close to the A1 which gives quick and easy access to Newcastle City, Tyneside and the Scottish Borders.
